Professor Peter McCaffery
Peter McCaffery’s lab studies the role of vitamin A and retinoic acid in the central nervous system. After obtaining his PhD in New Zealand in pathology his research in the US at Harvard Medical School and University of Massachusetts Medical School led to a new view of how retinoic acid was regulated in the embryo. He was the first to demonstrate the importance of the RALDHs as retinoic acid synthesising enzymes that regulate retinoic acid concentration. After moving to the University of Aberdeen in 2006 Peter’s attention is now on retinoic acid function in the adult brain, with focus on the hippocampus and hypothalamus.
