Professor Nigel Pyne
Nigel Pynes' research is focused on the role of the bioactive lipid sphingosine 1-phosphate in regulating health and disease with particular emphasis on cancer. His group at Strathclyde University is concerned with understanding the basic biochemical mechanisms by which sphingosine 1-phosphate promotes cell survival and amplifies growth factor-dependent pathology. A major objective is the identification of novel compounds designed to abrogate the action of sphingosine 1-phosphate in disease. His doctoral and post-doctoral research in Biochemistry at the Universities of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and Glasgow focused on cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases and their role in insulin action. He joined the University of Strathclyde in 1989 and was appointed Professor in 2000. He is a recipient of the Sandoz Prize (awarded by the British Pharmacological Society in 1995 for contributions to Pharmacology) and is an elected member of the Academy of Science, University of Bologna (2009-).
