Next Generation DNA Sequencing
SULSA researchers benefit from a fast, low-cost next generation DNA sequencing and analysis service provided by The Gene Pool at the University of Edinburgh, the Sir Henry Wellcome Functional Genomics Facility at the University of Glasgow and the ARK-Genomics Centre for Comparative and Functional Genomics (ARK-Genomics) at the Roslin Institute.
The Gene Pool offers gigabase-scale DNA sequencing using Illumina Solexa and Roche 454 platforms, with a range of data-analysis services provided by a dedicated SULSA bioinformatician. The Gene Pool also offers a low‑cost Illumina digital transcriptomics (Illumina-DT) service that is supported by a SULSA technologist.
A SULSA bioinformatics specialist based at the Sir Henry Wellcome Functional Genomics Facility is available to assist SULSA users with their Illumina-DT data analysis.
The ARK-Genomics Centre for Comparative and Functional Genomics (ARK-Genomics) is an established high-throughput research and technology facility which utilises the latest genomics technologies for research into genome structure, genetic variation, gene expression and gene function. The laboratory employs a range of technologies, including DNA Sequencing (Illumina/Solexa next-generation sequencing, Sanger), microarrays (Agilent, Affymetrix, Illumina, Nimblegen), SNP genotyping (Goldengate, Infinium, Affymetrix) and bioinformatics. ARK-Genomics is based within The Roslin Institute and Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and thus enjoys state-of-the-art laboratory facilities within the new Roslin Institute building at Easter Bush.
The technology base within ARK-Genomics is focussed on six major instruments/technology platforms which enable the high throughput analysis of the genome and transcriptome:
- Illumina HiSeq 2000 – nucleic acid sequencing
- Illumina BeadXpress – medium throughput SNP, gene expression and protein assays
- Illumina iScan scanner – high throughput SNP, gene expression assays
- Affymetrix 7G scanner and 450 Fluidics stations - gene expression, SNP genotyping
- Affymetrix GeneTitan™ system – gene expression, SNP genotyping; 96-well format
- Axon 4200A slide scanner – 5 micro resolution
