The Director

SULSA Professor Andrew HopkinsSULSA’s Director and chief advocate is Professor Andrew Hopkins FRSC FSB, SULSA Research Professor in Translational Biology and Chair in Medicinal Informatics at The University of Dundee. He is an internationally-recognized leader in chemogenomics and has authored some of the highest cited papers in the field of Pharmacology that have been published in the past decade.

 
Andrew was recruited to Scotland by SULSA in 2007 and appointed Director of SULSA in 2011. Prior to moving to academia Andrew spent a decade in the pharmaceutical industry, where many of the concepts he developed – such as the druggable genome, ligand efficiency and polypharmacology – have become widely adopted.
 
As Director, Andrew has overall responsibility for the strategy, management and promotion of SULSA. He chairs the Executive Committee, liaises with the International Advisory Board, and acts as a point of contact for the three theme directors. He directs SULSA activity in graduate education, knowledge exchange and science policy. Andrew is keen to develop SULSA leading role in fostering scientific excellence and innovation across the Scottish life sciences research community, through collaboration and networking.
 
Andrew's research is focused on developing novel methods to improve drug discovery, such as automating drug design, fragment screening and prioritizing drug targets in genomes. For more information, see Andrew's profile on the University of Dundee's website by clicking here.
