BioSKAPE Industry PhD Studentships

The Scottish Funding Council has awarded SULSA funding for 20 Industry PhD Studentships as part of the Bio-industry Skills Knowledge and People Exchange (BioSKAPE) programme. These collaborative studentships will equip PhD graduates with the research skills and commercial experience needed by industry. They will also drive new collaborations with industry and accelerate industrial research projects.

SULSA is accepting applications all year round, on a rolling deadline. However, please notify SULSA of your interest or intention to apply, and where possible, a timescale for submission.

*Please note that students are not eligible to apply directly to SULSA for these studentships*.

Scope and criteria: Projects in all areas of the life sciences will be considered but the skills and research outcomes for the project must address a clear area of demand for the Scottish life sciences sector. Interdisciplinary projects, for example at the interface of biology and chemistry, physics, informatics, engineering or social sciences are welcomed. Projects involving a Scottish-based SME partner will be prioritised.  The main criteria for selection are:

  • Quality of training offered
  • Quality and potential impact of project
  • Depth of company involvement
  • Benefits for Scotland's life sciences sector

Type of Projects Funded: Projects must address a clear area of demand for the Scottish Life Sciences sector and demonstrate commercial and doctoral or masters level training for the student.

Eligibility: Researchers from SULSA universities in conjunction with employees from UK companies are eligible to apply.  Scottish-based small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) will be given priority.  International companies will only be eligible if there is clear demonstration of impact on the Scottish economy.

Amount awarded: 50% of the student stipend and home-fees (around £38K for a PhD and £6K for an MRes).  The matching 50% of the stipend, fees and full consumables-costs must be provided by the company and/or the university.  The minimum contribution expected from the company is a total of around £20K for a PhD or £3K for the MRes over the period of the training (at least 25%). The Company contribution can be in cash or in-kind, or a combination of both, with the level of overall contribution being considered as part of the assessment process.
