SUPA Call for Proposals for Industrial Prize Studentships in Physics and Life Sciences

Introduction

The main aim of the SUPA Industrial Prize Studentships is to facilitate knowledge exchange between Scottish Companies and the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA), along with collaborators in life sciences and medicine.

These Prize Studentships will provide funding for 3 year PhD studentships in the area of physics and the life sciences or medicine, with additional support for a further six months for writing up.

Each studentship will be awarded to a partnership between a Scottish company and an academic in SUPA with the funding provided to the host university through the SUPA Graduate School.

Both UK/EU and overseas students are eligible for the studentships.

Financial and Other Contributions

Each SUPA Industrial Prize student will be based principally at a SUPA university (University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Heriot-Watt University, University of St Andrews, University of Strathclyde, University of the West of Scotland).

The student must also spend part of his or her time at the company premises, with a minimum period of three months during the studentship. The company must ensure sufficient time is allocated to the provision of industrial training during the studentship. Such training can cover technical topics, business related topics, and generic and transferable skills.

The company must make a financial contribution to the project. This can be in kind. The company is also responsible for expenses incurred by the student as a direct result of attendance at its premises, such as the cost of travel and accommodation.

The minimum value of the company’s contribution is 20% of the total project cost. The company undertakes to meet its own share of the total project cost which must represent at least 20% of the total project budget; company contributions may be cash or “in-kind”.

Studentships will be subject to monitoring and evaluation to measure progress, capture benefits to the parties, and assess impact on an ongoing basis.

Eligibility

Proposals may be submitted by any company with a research and/or manufacturing base in Scotland and activity in the interface area of physics and life sciences or medicine. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please contact Mat Wasley, matthew.wasley@supa.ac.uk, 0131 451 4427, before submitting an application.

How to Apply

Click here to download a Word document containing the application form. Please complete all its sections. Applications exceeding the stated character limits will not be accepted.

The completed forms should be sent in PDF format to SUPA Central, admin@supa.ac.uk by 21 January 2011.

Assessment of Proposals

The INSPIRE project team will rank the studentships for funding according to the following criteria:

  • Scientific or technological quality of the proposed work
  • The benefits of the collaboration for the student, the company and the academic
  • The capacity for supervision of the student
  • Opportunities to be made available by the company to the student for relevant training
  • Arrangements for knowledge transfer, and the likely impact of the research.
  • The company contribution to the project relative to the company size

It is expected that a total of three studentships will be awarded.

Decisions and Start Dates

Decisions will be available by 7 February. All applicants will be contacted informing them of the outcome of their proposal. Students will typically commence their studies in September 2011. Studentships unfilled by 31 January 2012 will be withdrawn and reassigned
